10 Reasons Why You Might Be Binge Eating

Updated: Jun 11, 2023

So I’m here to talk about binge eating. For the longest time I had so much shame around my binge eating because I thought I was the only one in the world who struggled with it.

Well it turns out 2.8 million people struggle with binge eating disorder (BED) in the U.S. alone, making it by far the most common eating disorder. Even more people struggle with binge eating behaviors, but are not officially diagnosed with BED.

Why you might be binge eating
Binge Eating

There are many reasons why binge eating can happen, but here are 10 of the most common reasons why you might be binge eating:

✔️ You’re not physically getting enough calories during the day.

✔️ You’re restricting certain food groups (e.g. carbs, sugar).

✔️ You’re labeling food as “good” or “bad.”

✔️ You feel guilt/ shame/ self-judgment when you don’t eat in a way that you see acceptable.

✔️ The unpleasant feelings associated with not eating “perfectly” can trigger a binge or emotional eating to cope with these feelings.

✔️ You’re weighing yourself regularly and basing your self-esteem on the number you see on the scale.

✔️ You’re relying on external cues (i.e. counting calories, following a specific diet plan) to tell you what and how much to eat.

✔️ You have the mentality of “diet starts tomorrow… better get it in now!”

✔️ You have an “on or off the wagon” approach with food.

✔️ You are dissatisfied with your body and see it as something that can be controlled through diet if you “just try harder.”
